This weekend KC Green and I were both drunk-tweeting at each other and then this happened!
Now everyone who gets the $60 DELUXE PACK of Story War will get this card based on Anime Club! They’re a gang of insufferable teens from the Gunshow comic who like to bust the skulls of rival anime gangs. Could they win in a fight against a mythological creature? Or anyone? Can they stop punching each other long enough to accomplish anything at all? Or will playing the anime club suddenly turn the battle into an anime? I … I don’t know, I guess DELUXE PACK backers will find out!
The Anime Club isn’t the only familiar card you’ll see in the DELUXE PACK! We’re working on getting even more popular Internet characters in the DELUXE PACK before the campaign ends - hopefully we can get a quasi-Super Smash Brothers thing going! Right now the DELUXE PACK contains: Anime Club, Ophelia, Grumpy Cat, Nyan Cat, Keyboard Cat, Scumbag Hat and Cyberspace.
If you haven’t already, make sure to go back Story War on Kickstarter!

Wow, we hit that stretch goal super fast! To celebrate, here are a preview of four of our favorite items in the base set!
Now that we’ve hit the “base set upgrade” we’re going to include some of the features of the DELUXE PACK in the BASIC PACK: The basic pack will now include a sampling of blank cards that users can draw on, as well as it’s own mini-comic that will contain different comics from the DELUXE PACK version. These rewards *stack* too, so if you ordered the DELUXE PACK you’re also getting everything in the BASIC PACK as well, which means you’ll have even more blank cards and even more comics.
But also, based on the comments, it sounds like you guys want more brand new cards. Fear not! Just because we don’t have expansion cards listed as stretch goals doesn’t mean we’re done adding new cards to the game. We’re still working on new promo cards that will be added to the DELUXE PACK for free, like Ophelia from To Be Or Not To Be:
We’re currently working on the art for Hamlet and King Hamlet, who will accompany Ophelia in the DELUXE PACK. We’re also working on securing more deals to make promotional cards based on characters you might be familiar with, and you’ll be hearing about those as we lock them in.
The DELUXE PACK’s cards are sort of an experimental thing that we can play around with without worrying about the integrity of the proper game. We expect cards in the base set and expansion to be recognizable to anyone, but it’s okay if cards in the DELUXE PACK are based on niche things, like Ryan North’s hamlet book. And we just realized we can totally just… put in some really wacky cards in the DELUXE PACK that are made up by our backers.
So, lets do that! In the comment thread of this update, suggest some items you’d like us to include in the DELUXE PACK! Check out the items shown above for inspiration.
Items are more fun when they’re open-ended, and can change the flow of battle without giving the user an automatic win. The Wishing Star, listed above, is by far my favorite item. It’s also important to the universe of Story War, as you’ll notice the Wishing Star is a recurring motif throughout our art, sort of like the Triforce in Zelda. Try watching our video again and see how many times you can spot it!
We’ll go through the comments and pick THREE of our favorite item card concepts and we’ll draw them and post them for you guys in a future update. Be sure to read everyone else’s comments and let us know which ones you like the best!
you guys should really get into this! Not only its a REALLY FUN GAME, but it also has GREAT SUPPORT behind it!
Personally, the best tier would be the 40$ Tier, but dont worry if you cant pitch in so much… The Print and Play tier is also really good for a mere 10$!!
Who knows, maybe this will become your new favorite game!
Oh also! I forgot to mention that Jaime (aka tropicalwind (aka the person I’m reblogging this from)) drew the Pumpkin Chariot, which is one of my favorite cards! Jaime is one of our new illustrators! Isn’t the Pumpkin Chariot good? It’s so cool. Everyone go follow him!

Hey everyone! We have new artists! They’ve already done some art, as seen above! (I just realized all four of those items are metal? Huh.)
In this post we said we’re looking for artists and we found some! Meet these guys/girls:
We’re trying to crunch to meet some deadlines and they’re gonna be helping out with that! We might need some more people later on but we don’t even have time to set that up just yet. But the emails you sent in are still on file (a lot of them went unread, there were just too many!) and I might follow up on some of them later.
But the next time we’re looking to add more illustrators to our stable, we’ll let you know by way of blog post.
PS: HOW COOL ARE THESE ITEMS?

My friend Tom has made a cool card game with his friends (Brad O’Farrell and Vondell Swain) called “Story War”!! My favorite card is Bugbear, so here is this comic I did called “BugBear’s Existential Crisis”.
Original card by Vondell:
hahhah look at that guy just look at him
Check the Story War kickstarter!!
Here’s another taste of the comic that comes with the Story War DELUXE PACK! And that taste is sweet like honey.
Those of you familiar with Emmy (and if you’re not, you should get on that) will probably understand that when I approached her to do a comic I expected something, y’know, pretty and cute
Instead, we got something truly… majestic! It captures the debate surrounding the bugbear perfectly. Whenever that card is played, the discussion erupts at the table: is he bugs, or is he a bear? The answer is always a resounding “yes!”.
Thank you Emmy!

Holy cow! $70k! in the first 10 days! That means we’ve unlocked new campaigns written by Cantrip Games, but ALSO we have an exciting announcement relating to campaigns:
We’re going to build a website where users can write their own interactive campaigns that can be viewed on mobile devices. So when you’re playing Story War with your friends in real life someone could easily load CantripGames.com on their smart phone and you’ll be able to jump right into alternate game modes and rules that are displayed right there on your phone! No printing necessary! Online campaigns can even even contain interactive components and rich media, like photos, video, and branching story paths.
We’ll be putting all of our campaigns online for free, and also offer printable versions of ones that would make sense as printed versions. We’re also going to make it so users can post their campaigns online for free! It’s going to be really cool!
We’re well on our way to our $100k goal stretch goal, which will make CantripGames.com a fully interactive online hub for Story War content and even playing against your friends online. But … what happens after $100k? We’ve got some REALLY big things planned, but we can’t announce them until after we hit $100k! So lets get up to $100k as fast as we can!
ALSO: Have you guys been thinking of cool things you would want to do with campaigns? What are some cool game modes you think would work well the Story War cards? Let us know in the comments section of this Backer Update!

forgofamilyforgofriendsx said: i don't know if you were already planning on it, but there should be (separate) cards for harpies and sirens
The Mermaid often gets played as a siren; people invoke Ariel’s voice to support it - we originally had them as separate cards but nixed Siren because they generally just got played identically.
If there’s enough support from backers, a separate Siren card might make it into the expansion, though!

Story War promo art!
Vondell ran out of stuff to draw so now we’re just paying him to draw this awesome “fan art.”
The only direction we gave Vondell was to draw stuff kind of like the early Pokemon promo art:
So far it’s come out pretty good!

Story War is an ongoing project that i’ve now contributed well over 100 illustrations to. It’s a very fun storytelling card game being developed by Brad O’Farrell, Tom McLean, and myself. I can’t reveal too much of the finished card artwork yet, but here is a small sample of my involvement in the project. Keep tabs on Story War by following our work blog.
Fun fact about the robot: We let playtesters draw characters on blank cards, and most of them were goofy subversive characters. Except the robot. Every single group drew a robot. Because we clearly needed a straight up robot. So now we have one!

Hey it’s midnight! It’s the 17th! It’s Greg’s birthday!
Oni: I made sure we got the Oni done by today because today is jetgreguar’s birthday and the Oni is somewhat based on him! Greg sent a bunch of his friends to our playtests and they’ve been a big help in developing the game! We also based him a little bit on Moses from Attack the Block. Rather than making him just a demon (it’s easy to get a lot of those in a game like this) we decided to make him a badass modern day ninja who also might just be cosplaying a demon. We were originally going to give him a katana but we realized it’d be way cooler to have a separate Masamune item card. Because a katana that comes with a character is alright but a rare Masamune item would probably be strong enough to slice a building in half in a single swipe! Especially if wielded by the Oni!
Kami: We designed the Oni and Kami to be a pair! The Oni and Kami are wearing the same mask, only flipped upside down. We have a lot of duos and trios of cards, that have different things in common. I wanted to have a duo that had totally different shapes and concepts but still felt oddly related. The platonic ideal for a Kami (at least to me) is a deer-like creature whereas Oni is humanoid, so I thought this would be a cool duo to do that with. The Kami is based on Deer God from Princess Mononoke and Xerneas from Pokemon X/Y and probably a bunch of other deer-like Kami. I think there was one in Twilight Princess too.
Just because we finished all the art doesn’t mean we’re done! We’ve already started working on the expansion cards! Our Kickstarter (which launches at the end of the month) will give you the option to just buy the 100 card base set, or buy the expansion, which we’ll develop in collaboration with our KS backers. Follow us to be kept in the loop about the Kickstarter, which should launch in the next 2 weeks!
We’re going to try to make the expansion as big as possible; the more people who back our Kickstarter, the bigger we’ll make it! Unlike the base set, which was done in semi-secrecy, we’ll be much more open about the expansion cards. We’re even open to bringing in other artists who will work with Vondell to come up with original characters that are done in the same style and junk!
Also, reminder: We’ve got sort of a fan art contest thing going on! Anyone who puts fan art under the #Story War tag will be given a special discount code for the kickstarter! More on that here!
Happy birthday Greg!

Guys! We did it! We finally finished all 100 pieces of art for Story War! There may be a few tweaks and updates before the final print, but this feels super good!
For those of you that don’t know, Story War is a competitive story telling card game that Frezned, BradOFarrell (me), and Vondell-Swain have been making for the last 6 months. We met over tumblr and most of the people who came to our playtests have been tumblr folk
We’ve done over 100 play tests and we’ve meticulously written and re-written the copy and even re-draw the art to make sure each game is as fun as possible. It’s a subjectivity game about competitive/collaborative story-telling; we’ve worked really hard to identify what is fun and not fun to talk about and we’ve shaped the cards to maximize funness. And now it’s super fun!
If you want to buy a copy, our Kickstarter is launching at the end of the month. If you want to keep in the loop, follow our blog, and we’ll let you know when it comes out! Also if you reblogged this post to help get the word out that would be awesome!
FAN ART CONTEST
We’re also going to be sending a Secret Code that you can use on the kickstarter to get a special edition of the game for a discounted price to anyone who draws fan art and posts it on the #Story War tag. It can be of the characters in this post, or anything on our blog!
