What do you guys think of this REALLY ROUGH box art mockup? Vondell would redraw this all as real drawings in new poses, I’m just trying to get a sense of what would look right as a layout and which characters say the most about the game.
I think the best characters to show on the box are the Zombie, Werewolf, Fairy and Frog Prince. Here’s my reasoning:
“Who would win in a fight between a Zombie and a Werewolf?” is a question that could be put on the back of the box and it immediately engages people in the kind of thinking that Story War is all about. I also really like the Zombie and Werewolf designs we ended up with, they look aggressive and cool but have a little bit of social nuance to them. I think the Werewolf should be using the Shrink Ray item because it’s a little cue that lets people know this isn’t a purely fantasy game, there are some scifi elements as well. Also everyone looks cool holding a gun, even if they wear a fedora.
Then I’d want the Frog Prince and Fairy in there, chiefly because they’re really small and wouldn’t detract too much from the focus (Z v W) but also because they help flesh out that it’s not just hard fantasy, it has fairytale elements as well. The Frog Prince also has a sword which is useful for the same reason that the Shrink Ray is useful - if you look closely at the box art you’d see stuff like “sword vs guns” and “werewolf vs zombie” and you immediately start thinking about how those concepts would pare off against each other.
(Also as for the Frog Prince’s silly pose in this mockup, it’s because I’d want Vondell to draw him doing some sort of Froggy leap attack like this.)
Lastly I’d want the background to be the capital city, which would be much more simple and out of focus than it is in this picture. Mostly I want the negative space in the middle between them to feature the big Office Building Castle thing, because it’s a good detail that immediately conveys the tone of our setting.
So it’s like, in terms of details you notice:
- Werewolf vs Zombie
- Fairytales vs Mythology
- Sword vs Gun
- Modern vs Medieval
I think that’s sort of the order of importance of… concepts… in Story War, and it does a good job of explaining the game visually.
What do you guys think?
